We got Nick in foster care after his first owner
passed away from breast cancer. He was grieving and depressed but
gradually perked up and we couldn't part with him. Over the next
8 years, he was the family patriarch, patiently putting up with cats
and puppies crawling all over him. He was devoted to me and right
up until the end, would try desperately to heave himself to his feet
and follow me from room to room. While I love and treasure every
animal who comes into my home and my care, there are those whose
devotion, whose patient constancy, is so truly extraordinary we can
only pray to experience it more than once in a lifetime. Nick was
such a one, and my days will never be the same without his quiet
presence.
